7th Singapore Graduate Forum on SoutheastAsia Studies

Organised by the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications from postgraduate students who are engaged in research on Southeast Asia to attend the 7th Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asian Studies on 16 – 20 July 2011.

This 3-day forum will be part of ARI’s 5-day Graduate Development Institute and Forum, which in addition to the forum will include two full days of sessions aimed to develop graduate student understandings of academia and relevant skills, through roundtable discussions with faculty, focused practical seminars and breakout group discussions.

This event coincides with the Asia Research Institute’s Asian Graduate Student Fellowship Programme 2012, which brings some 35 graduate students to ARI for a two and a half month period. These students will also participate in the Graduate Forum.

Postgraduate students working on Southeast Asia are invited to submit abstracts based either on work in progress that is at an advanced stage (i.e. already completed data collection and analysis), or on completed work. NUS students are encouraged to take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with students from ASEAN as well as those from other regions whose interests focus on Southeast Asia.

This three-day forum, the seventh of an annual series of forums for graduate students who work onSoutheast Asia, will be organised thematically. Themes broadly reflect (but are not limited to) the core research strengths of the Asia Research Institute, including  the Asian dynamics of religion, politics, economy, gender, culture, language, migration, urbanism,  science and technology, population and social change.

In addition to student presentations, experts from the region will also be invited to give keynote speeches, sharing their insights on challenges and issues facing contemporary social science scholarship.

Students whose proposals are selected for presentation at the forum will participate in the full 5 days of the Graduate Development Institute and Forum. Partial or full funding may be available for selected students. Funding will cover board and lodging for the duration of the forum, and in selected cases, air travel to Singapore by the most economical means.
SUBMISSION OF PAPER PROPOSAL

Graduate students should submit a 300-400 words abstract of their proposed paper using the attached form to Mr Jonathan Lee at jonathan.lee@nus.edu.sg no later than 19 March 2012. Click here for the Application Form.

The abstract should clarify the substantive issues which your paper will address and be firmly grounded in your own research project. Please include information on objectives, methods, and findings, as well as explain the original contribution the research makes to the field of study.

One confidential letter of recommendation from a supervisor should also be forwarded along with your form by the same date.

Successful applicants will be notified by 9 April 2012.

Those selected will have to submit full-length papers, of around 4,000-5,000 words in length, by 18 June 2012.

The State University of New York at New Paltz will host the 48th annual meeting of the New York Conference on Asian Studies (NYCAS) on September 28-29, 2012

The NYCAS 2012 program committee invites proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual papers on all aspects of Asian and Asian-American history, culture, and contemporary life, representing disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and professional schools. Interdisciplinary proposals are also welcome.

The theme for NYCAS 2012 at SUNY New Paltz is CONTESTING TRADITION. We invite scholars working in all areas and disciplines of Asian Studies and Asian American Studies to submit proposals for individual papers, panels, and roundtables that engage this theme in innovative and provocative ways. Graduate students and scholars working in the areas of South and Southeast Asia are especially encouraged to apply.

Topics may include, but are by no means limited to, the following:

• Interrogation of tradition-bound social and gender roles in Asian political and economic discourses, art and popular media
• Resistance to established canons and epistemological models in all areas of knowledge and cultural production or social science
• Contested religious, philosophical or cultural traditions, religious sites, or cultural properties across borders
• Invented traditions and their political, social, historical, or cultural repercussions

The deadline for all paper, panel, and roundtable submissions is May 15, 2012.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Please submit proposals to: NYCAS2012@gmail.com. Individual paper proposals should include the name, institutional affiliation, and e-mail address of the presenter, the title of the paper, and an abstract not exceeding 250 words in length. Panel and Roundtable proposals should include a cover sheet listing the title of the panel/roundtable, the names, institutional affiliations, and e-mail addresses of the chair, discussant, and presenters, and, in addition to the paper proposals, a panel abstract not exceeding 250 words.

INDIVIDUAL PAPER proposals should include the full title and a brief abstract of 250 words or less. Individual papers will be assigned by the NYCAS 2012 program committee to a panel according to topic and should be short enough to present in 15-20 minutes. Word-for-word reading of papers is discouraged.

A PANEL consists of 3 or 4 papers organized around a common topic or theme, and a chair (who may also be one of the panelists). All panel proposals should include a title and brief abstract of the panel (250 words or less), and a title and brief abstract of each paper. Panels will run for 90 minutes, and paper presentations should be short enough to allow for questions and discussion. Creative panel formats that encourage discussion and exchange are especially welcomed.

ROUNDTABLE format may vary, but could include introductory remarks by each roundtable participant, followed by comments and discussion among participants and the audience. All roundtable proposals should include a title, content summary, and description of the anticipated contributions of each roundtable participant.

The Board of EuroSEAS announces that the 7th EuroSEAS Conference will be held in Lisboa, Portugal, from the 2nd to the 5th July, 2013. The host institution will be the School of Social and Political Sciences of the Technical University of Lisboa (ISCSP/UTL).

The Board is confident that members will propose a range of diverse panels in line with the high standards obtained in the past. Members wishing to propose panels are strongly encouraged to involve partners from a different institution to guarantee the sort of international co-operation that is a hallmark of our organization. Young scholars are welcome to advance panel proposals.

Submissions will be accepted in English. The program committee will work with panel organizers to ensure disciplinary diversity and content compatibility. Panel organizers will be expected to circulate their respective Call for papers as from the 15th May up to the 15th September 2012. Panels should typically aim to admit between 6 and 8 papers.

The Board will announce the accepted panels no later than the 15th May 2012. Panels’ organizers should send the panels’ members and their paper abstracts no later than the 15th October 2012

Presque soixante ans après la chute de la garnison française à Dien Bien Phu, nous connaissons toujours mal l’autre côté combattant. Le « phénomène Viet Minh » est toujours expliqué soit comme la manifestation d’un patriotisme vietnamien « éternel » soit comme l’incarnation du « totalitarisme » communiste. Se basant sur des sources vietnamiennes inédites, Christopher Goscha rompt avec ces interprétations pour analyser la manière dont les nationalistes vietnamiens conduits par le Parti communiste forgèrent un véritable Etat dans la perspective de mener l’effort de guerre, de préserver son assise territoriale et de projeter dans l’avenir la souveraineté nationale.

Goscha remet également en cause le mythe d’une simple « guerre de guérilla » asymétrique opposant le colonisé au colonisateur. Grâce à l’assistance sino-soviétique, les communistes vietnamiens entamèrent une conversion vers une forme moderne de guerre conventionnelle et à cet effet, mirent sur pied une armée professionnelle. Pour réussir cette transition, le Parti accentua sa mainmise sur l’Etat, la société et l’armée.

Le Parti instaura simultanément une révolution sociale radicale, non seulement pour mobiliser toujours plus de forces mais aussi pour remodeler l’Etat et la société selon le moule communiste. L’histoire du Vietnam contemporain ne se réduit pas à « la » guerre, mais assurément elle fut sa matrice. En somme, l’Etat vietnamien a fait la guerre autant que la guerre a fait l’Etat.

Christopher Goscha est spécialiste reconnu de la guerre d’Indochine. Professeur en relations internationales à l’Université du Québec à Montréal, il a publié de nombreux ouvrages en anglais.

Résumé

La thèse porte sur la tradition poético-musicale du Ca trù pratiquée au Viêt-Nam par une centaine de musiciens spécialistes. L’enjeu est de décrire et interpréter cette tradition par le biais de ses pratiques (Ière partie), de ses apprentissages (IIème partie) et de ses esthétiques (IIIème partie) afin de comprendre le sens de son élitisme, d’origine lettrée, dans le Viêt-Nam contemporain gouverné depuis 1954 par le Parti Communiste. L’étude s’élabore à partir de deux hypothèses. La première est que l’observation des pratiques sociales du Ca trù offre une porte d’entrée pour comprendre la signification élitiste de cette tradition. La deuxième est que si le Ca trù est aujourd’hui encore porteur d’un capital symbolique élitiste, c’est que son élitisme doit imprégner la matière poético-musicale même et qu’il doit pouvoir être analysé au cœur des processus de transmission et de performance musicales. Les réflexions de la thèse s’appuient principalement sur une enquête de terrain de dix-sept mois, menée entre 2003 et 2008 dans trois clubs de Ca trù : le club de Ca trù du village de Lỗ Khê, non loin de Hanoï, qui se réunit lors des cérémonies votives célébrées dans les lieux de culte aux divinités tutélaires et patrons de métier en faveur des villageois et plus particulièrement des notables ; un réseau hanoïen de clubs de Ca trù qui ont dû se positionner par rapport à la politique étatique de patrimonialisation visant, depuis 2005, à façonner une culture de prestige du Ca trù ; enfin, le club de Ca trù de Hô Chi Minhville, où le revivalisme du Ca trù donne lieu à des controverses entre factions de l’élite cultivée originaire du Nord.

L’analyse des données de l’enquête aboutit à trois résultats principaux : 1) L’élitisme social caractéristique de la pratique du Ca trù s’est adapté en partie à la nouvelle société née de la Révolution d’Août 1945. 2) L’élitisme du Ca trù se situe non seulement dans la pratique mais aussi dans la matière poético-musicale même considérée comme la mise en œuvre d’une connaissance à la fois linguistique (celle du sino-vietnamien), formelle (celle de la forme poétique et d’une grammaire musicale élaborée) et expressive (celle de techniques d’ornementation et de variation sophistiquées). 3) Enfin, l’élitisme du Ca trù peut s’analyser au cœur de la performance, dans un cadre à la fois identitaire, expressif et critique (selon la « bonne écoute » incarnée par le joueur de tambour lettré qui crée une distanciation intellectualisée avec l’émotion au travers d’un « commentaire » du poème chanté).

Le jury est composé, selon l’organisation des soutenances propre à Nanterre, de : deux rapporteurs extérieurs (Messieurs Philippe PAPIN, directeur d’études de l’Ecole pratique des Hautes Etudes et membre de l’Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient et François PICARD, professeur d’ethnomusicologie analytique à l’Université Paris IV-Sorbonne) ; d’un membre de l’Ecole doctorale « Milieux, cultures et sociétés du passé et du présent » (Monsieur Jean LAMBERT, maître de conférences) ; et du directeur de la thèse (Monsieur Gilles TARABOUT, directeur de recherche CNRS). Sont également membres du jury Madame Dana RAPPOPORT (chargée de recherche au CNRS, Centre d’Asie du Sud-Est) et Monsieur TRẦN Quang Hải (retraité du CNRS).
