Art, archéologie et anthropologie de l’Asie

EFEO – MUSÉE GUIMET

L’École française d’Extrême-Orient et le Musée des arts asiatiques Guimet, deux grandes institutions de recherches sur l’Asie, lancent en novembre 2007 un nouveau cycle de conférences qui présenteront les résultats des recherches les plus récentes menées à partir de documents primaires et le terrain asiatique. Une publication des conférences comprenant de riches illustrations clôturera chaque année la fin d’un cycle thématique.

Prochaine confèrence le 7 Février 2008 au Musée Guimet sur "Paharpur, le plus grand monastère bouddhique d’Asie du Sud", par Vincent Lefèvre, conservateur au musée Guimet, commissaire de l’exposition.

L'art bouddhique au Champa, influences et spécificité, par Pierre Baptiste.

Les travaux épigraphiques et archéologiques concernant le Champa ancien ont mis en avant, depuis longtemps, l’importance du bouddhisme dans le courant des 8e-10e siècles. Les textes conservés permettent de se faire une certaine idée de la forme du Mahâyâna pratiqué par les Cham à cette époque. Mais les témoignages archéologiques se font davantage l’écho du contexte culturel large et varié dans lequel s’inscrit ce mouvement bien original qui participe tant du monde indien que de celui de la Chine.

Pierre Baptiste, conservateur au Musée Guimet depuis 1996, en charge des collections d’Asie du Sud-Est, commissaire de l’exposition « Trésors d’art du Vietnam – la sculpture du Champa » en 2005, enseignant à l’Ecole du Louvre et participe à des travaux scientifiques concernant les arts anciens du Cambodge, du Vietnam et de la Thaïlande.

Après les succès rencontrés par les différentes éditions organisées au Vietnam, en Thaïlande, à Hong-Kong et en Corée, la huitième édition se tiendra pour la première fois en Europe sur le thème de l’affirmation de l’Asie sur la scène touristique mondiale.

Dans les années récentes, l’Asie a joué un rôle croissant sur la scène touristique mondiale. Il est couramment admis que le tourisme a été inventé au XVIIIème siècle en Europe et qu’il s’est développé d’abord en Amérique du Nord puis dans le reste du Monde. Avec l’affirmation du poids de l’Asie, des mutations considérables affectent et transformeront l’industrie du tourisme dans le Monde.

Ten Years After : Reformasi and New Social Movements in Indonesia, 1998-2008
University of California, Berkeley , 25-26 avril 2008

In May 1998, following months of protests, and triggered by the outbreak of rioting in Indonesia’s major cities, the authoritarian New Order regime of President Suharto collapsed after more than thirty years in power. Since these tumultuous events took place, Indonesia has experienced profound change at many levels in society, often at a rapid pace.

As the tenth anniversary of the fall of the New Order approaches, the Center for Southeast Asia Studies at UC Berkeley and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at UCLA announce a CALL FOR PAPERS for a JOINT CONFERENCE that will examine the new forces for change that have emerged in Indonesia over this past decade and the transformations that have occurred, while also reflecting upon the New Order and its legacies.

We invite submissions for presentations from scholars and graduate students conducting original research in the social sciences and humanities that address the primary theme of the conference. Specific topics or categories suggested for paper presentations include the following:

· Cultural transformations
· Religious movements

· NGO advocacy and activism

South East Asia Geography Association International Conference, Quezon City, Philippines, June 6-8 2008 - SEAGA 2008 International Conference.

Theme: Transformations and Embodiments in Southeast Asian Geographies: Changing Environments, People and Cultural Groups, Institutions and Landscapes

The Program Committee invites conference presentations from geographers from Southeast Asia and other parts of the world, affiliates of academic societies, officials and practitioners from public and private institutions, and independent scholars from the different fields in the social and natural sciences who are undertaking geographic studies and other researches that are related to the 2008 Conference theme. The Committee encourages creative and innovative paper presentations. At the same time in addition to panels, formats including thematic workshops, roundtable discussions, and other departures from traditional formal paper presentations are encouraged. The Committee particularly welcomes interdisciplinary or border-crossing proposals that enrich the various approaches in undertaking historical, chronological, geographic and other studies. Young scholars are especially encouraged to participate.

Proposals should be submitted to the 2008 SEAGA Conference Secretariat via email (seagaphil2008(at)yahoo.com / seagasec(at)yahoo.com) by January 14, 2008 (for abstracts of organized panels) and by January 21, 2008 (for individual paper abstracts). A proposal must include a 150-word abstract of the panel/paper as well as the name, affiliation, and contact details of the proponent. Panels that will be organized by potential chairs will be given priority but individual paper proposals will also be given equal consideration.

Topics for paper proposals/panels include the following: environment, gender and migration, hazards and mitigation, development and sustainability, culture and politics, geographic education and urban geography. Other relevant topics may be proposed.

The Southeast Asian Geography Association (SEAGA) is a scientific and educational society that was set up in 1990 by a group of geographers to organize the inaugural SEAGA Conference in Brunei Darussalam. Its members share interests in the theory, methods, and practice of geography and geographic education. As of February 2006, the association is formally registered with Singapore's Registrar of Societies (see www.seaga.co.nr/)

Foodscapes of southeast Asia

The York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) and Founder's College, York University, Toronto, Canada, will host Foodscapes of Southeast Asia on Friday, February 29, 2008.

This event will explore the relation between food consumption and food production in Southeast Asia. The afternoon consists of two panels of academic papers from different disciplinary perspectives with ample time for discussion. Currently, we expect to have presentations on the natural food revolution in Thailand, street foods of Hanoi, steamed rice cakes as representations of local identities in the Philippines, Women entrepreneurs in the food industry in Southeast Asia and the use of seaweed in the Philippines.
Attention will also be drawn to the multi-sensorial aspects of food. While the academic discourse on food is often text-based, knowledge about food is also coded in taste and vision; and our personal experiences with food reflect the integration of these different approaches to knowledge production. We will have at least one multimedia presentation entitled "Doing Lunch in Salaya".
The afternoon ends with a presentation by photographers and cookbook writers, Jeff Alford and Naomi Daguid, best-selling authors of Seductions of Rice, Hot Sour Salty Sweet, and Mangoes and Curry Leaves. They will present "Hot Sour Salty Sweet: A Culinary Journey along the Mekong River," followed by a special Southeast Asian meal.

Sixth EUROVIET Conference at the University of Hamburg - June 6/8, 2008

The EUROVIET conferences, organised as biennial events since 1993, have made important contributions to the coordination and development of this "small subject" in Germany, Europe, and beyond. The First EUROVIET colloquium met in Copenhagen in 1993, organised by the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) and the University of Copenhagen. EUROVIET II convened in Aix-en-Provence in 1995, organised by the University of Provence and the Institute of Southeast Asian Research (IRSEA) of the CNRS. EUROVIET III was organised by the University of Amsterdam in 1997, EUROVIET IV by the University of Passau in 1999. More than 100 participants took part in each of these conferences, coming mostly from Europe, but also from North America, Japan and of course from Vietnam. EUROVIET V, convened by the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg State University, was the latest of these successful conferences.

The conference theme Vietnam Takes Off reflects the contemporary situation of the country : a situation that is characterised in general by undeniable and widely acclaimed successes achieved during the ongoing reform process in the fields of economy, society, and culture. Yet this dynamic picture also displays problems, temporary setbacks, relics of old ways as well as new challenges.

3rd Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asia

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications from postgraduate students who are engaged in research on Southeast Asia to attend the 3rd Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asia Studies on 24 – 25 July 2008.

Postgraduate students working on Southeast Asia are invited to submit abstracts based either on work in progress that is at an advanced stage (i.e. already completed data collection and analysis), or on completed work. NUS students are encouraged to take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with students from ASEAN as well as those from other regions whose interests focus on Southeast Asia.

Graduate students should submit a 400-word abstract of their proposed paper using the attached PROPOSALFORM to Ms Valerie Yeo at valerie.yeo(at)nus.edu.sg no later than 16 May 2008.
